Description: This small, globular ceramic vessel has a rounded bottom. The neck flares to an added rim that has two small flange handles and incised lines on the top of the lip. The item is decorated with a continuous incised guilloche pattern around the neck and parallel lines around the shoulder. There is a cordmarked pattern all over the body. The cordmarking has been partially obscured by the incised lines on the neck and shoulder. The grit-tempered vessel is very dark brown to brown in color. Pot is complete, but has been repaired. Description: Small stone celt (ungrooved ax) is roughly rectangular with one end rounded and one end squared and sharpened. It tapers toward the rounded end. The celt is ground and polished. One side is flatter than the other. The edges are slightly flattened. It is gray mottled with very dark gray near the sharpened end and white near the rounded end. Description: Corroded copper breast plate is roughly rectangular in shape with rounded corners and slightly inwardly-curving side edges. Top and bottom edges are fairly straight. There are two perforations 32 mm from top edge and centrally located, evenly spaced, 89 mm apart. There are possible textile fragments adhering to the reverse face. Description: Copper plate is rectangular in shape. The long sides are straight and the shorter sides curve slightly inward. Corners are rounded. One of the long sides is slightly longer than the other. A large piece of woven textile is adhered to the upper surface. There also appears to be a piece of bark adhered adjacent to textile. Item has one small perforation adjacent to the fabric, toward the middle. The copper is moderate yellow green, dusky yellow green, moderate green, grayish yellow green, grayish olive green and dark reddish brown in color. The textile is very dark gray and light gray. Description: Reverse reads "Grave of John Cleve Symmes at North Bend, Ohio. Federal Writers' Photo." The tombstone, located in Congress Green Cemetery in North Bend (west of Cincinnati), and is one of the earliest contained therein. Residents established the "Pasture Graveyard" in the early 1800s by land previously owned by President William Henry Harrison's family. Many other Symmes and Harrison family members were also interred in the cemetery, which eventually became known as the Congress Green Cemetery. The cemetery closed to burials in 1884. Inscription on tombstone reads: " Here rest the remains of John Cleves Symmes, who at the foot of these hills, made the first settlement between the Miami Rivers. Born on Long Island, State of New York, July 21st A.D. 1742. died in Cincinnati February 26th A.D. 1814." Plaque on tomb reads "Revolutionary soldier John Cleves Symmes, 1742 - 1814. Marked by Cincinnati Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution" John Cleves Symmes, was a delegate to the Continental Congress from New Jersey, and later a pioneer in the Northwest Territory. He was the son of the Rev. Timothy Symmes (1715–1756) and Mary Cleves (died c. 1746) of Suffolk County, New York on Long Island. He was also the father-in-law of President William Henry Harrison, who married his daughter Anna. They eloped on November 25, 1795 View on Ohio Memory.
